Elena municipality is situated in Central North Bulgaria. It covers the southern part of Veliko Tarnovo Region, the Pre-Balkan and the Balkan Mountains. The municipality is situated from 100 to 1500 sq.m. above sea level. The climate is moderately continental with the typical mountain manifestations. Cities and villages in Elena MunicipalityThe only town of the 125 settlements is the municipal center Elena. The surrounding villages, some of which are inhabited by only 20 people, are scattered high in the mountain and most of them are difficult to access in winter.

The Clock Tower built in 1812 by unknown master “Daskalovnitsata” – It is the first Bulgarian civil building in the town of Elena. It was built in 1844 because of the need of First Bulgarian School. “St. Nikola” Church - The oldest church in the town. The church was built secretly from the Turkish rule and according to the legend it was erected only for 40 days. The “St. Nikola” church dates from 16th century. The “Assumption” Church – built in 1837, it was the biggest church in Central North Bulgaria until the Liberation. At present day the Assumption Church is still one of the biggest in the country. The bell tower of the Assumption Church – built separately from the church in 1912. The Bakalova House – built in 1865. This is one of the most impressive buildings in Elena. Today the seat of the Tourist Informational Center of Elena is located there.
The Paleontology Museum is a must see site – you can find it on Karshovska Str. Kamburov Inn, Zlatiova House, Guneva House – all are part of the museum complex and represent the Balkan architecture in mid 19th century.
Bulgarian customs and tradition are well preserved in Elena region. Almost every family is still producing home made wine and fruit brandy like in old times.
Rural and eco tourism are very popular here. For the admirers of hiking and mountain tourism there are numerous picturesque eco tracks and tourist routes that reveal the natural beauties of Stara planina mountain. Fishing fans have the special chance of fishing in crystal-clear rivers and Yovkovtsi Dam in the region of the villages of Miikovtci, Hanevtzi , Balutsi and Valchovtzi. They can stay overnight in a tent on the bank of the river where are special camping sites with barbecues. Those who favor skiing have the opportunity of climbing the Chumerna peak.
