Danube River Bulgarian Port at Svishtov

Talking about economy we could not pass the Bulgarian Danube Port of Svishtov which recently has received investment in new port facilities. This investment is going to allow the processing of containers of all varieties, thus removing the major obstacle before the container trade at the Bulgarian Danube town.

With the investment in the new port facilities, Svishtov will be come a serious competitor to the Bulgarian Black Sea Port of Varna, but especially to the Greek port of Thessaloniki.

However, with the new container facilities and the shorter distance it would be more profitable to transport goods to Sofia and Central Bulgaria through Svishtov.

The Danube port town is also hoping to become an international transportation center for the Republic of Kosovo, Macedonia, and other states from the former Yugoslavia.

The chemical industry is well developed. Here is located one of the biggest factories in Bulgarian chemical industry “Sviloza” Enterprise - production of cellulose and paper.

The food industry is represented by Meat Plant – Svishtov - Production of meat products and sausages.

The region of Svishov is popular also as wine production area. Here is operating “Vinprom Svishtov”.

Location - Infrastructure - Transportation

Why Svishtov municipality is considered for one of the top locations not only by real estate agents but also by business investors?

Svishtov municipality is one of the most important transport locations in North Bulgaria, offering road, railway and river transport. The region has well developed infrastructure. The region has convenient location – proximity to the E-772 Sofia  Varna which is the closest highway; about 60 km away is situated the city of Rousse – and the “Bridge of Friendship” on the Danube River connecting Bulgaria with Romania.

The port of Svishtov has great significance and after the recent investments made in facilities is about to become international transportation center.

The International Airport of Sofia is located 233 km away, Varna Airport is located on a distance of 262 km. Although there is another airport very close to Svishtov – the one in Gorna Oryahovitsa, located only 85 km away, it is in preparаtion to open for international flights and Sofia Airport is still the closest international airport to Svishtov municipality.

There is a well developed coach service which cover lines to Rousse, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Lovech, Byala, Levski and other smaller settlements within the region.

The railway is traditionally common used. Municipality of Svishtov and its citizens benefit from modern trains although some of the old trains are also used.

There is a river station, as well but since 1992 there is no regular passenger transport along the Danube River on the Bulgarian part.

There is a town bus transport functioning in Svishtov, too.

The central location of Svishtov municipality in North Bulgaria, with proximity to the big consuming centers like Veliko Tarnovo, Lovech, Gorna Oriahovitsa and Pleven is favorable for the future economic expansion of the region.
